Adults in the early chapter after a significant loss.

Most of my grief work clients are adults in the first one to two years after a significant loss. Many are navigating the death of a spouse or long-term partner. Others have lost a parent, a child, a sibling, a close friend, a pet, or a life chapter that has closed forever.

What they share is the sense that what they are carrying cannot be rushed. Much of the typical advice – stay busy, it’s time to move on, there are better days ahead – does not acknowledge the depth of their lived experience.

If you are:

  • Quietly drowning in a world that keeps telling you to move on,
  • Wondering how you will ever make it through this loss?
  • Tired of pretending to be OK?
  • Feeling disconnected, confused, helpless, and afraid.

…this work may be for you.

The Approach

Not a formula – a walk you take with a companion.

The grief journey by definition is mysterious and ever-changing. There is no detailed map, but there are some markers and sign-posts along the way. Grief work with me rests on three primary pillars.

01

Witnessed Storytelling

Grief needs to be witnessed. It wants to be seen, heard, and felt. The heart of grief needs to know it has a place in the world, so we start with you sharing your unique journey. With patience and care.

02

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of attending to our experience – in this case, our grief – with a kind curiosity. This perspective opens our vision and allows us to see and feel our path more clearly. With more clarity comes more choice. We begin to relate to our grief as a friend, a trustable teacher from whom we have much to learn.

03

Somatic (Body-Based) Work

In addition to what grief does to our hearts and minds, it is also a deeply physical experience. A clenched jaw, a heavy chest, a tight belly, and a deep fatigue are all expressions of how our body shares its grief story. A somatic approach to grief is about learning to listen deeply to this unique physical story – using our breath, movement, and kind attention.

How the Work Unfolds

Weekly. Sixty minutes. Gentle but focused.

Grief work is typically weekly for 60 minutes. Some clients prefer 90-minute sessions; both are available.

Most clients work with me for three to six months when the work unfolds well. Some continue longer as they move through major life transitions after loss. The rhythm is always guided by what you are actually moving through.

The purpose of grief counseling is to transform your relationship with grief from problem to possibility.

The relationship with a loss continues to evolve for the rest of a life. What you leave with is:

  • A personal toolkit of practices – mindfulness, self-inquiry, breath, writing – that you can continue to use independently
  • A new capacity to hold and integrate the experience of loss as you grow into your life
  • A deeper access to your innate inner resources: courage, curiosity, trust, patience, and self-compassion
  • The growing experience of befriending your grief and that you have everything it takes to make this transformational journey
